Nevadans’ gas bills are already too [damn] high and Southwest Gas is proposing its largest rate increase ever, the fourth in the last five years, seeking to recover $70 million. With residential bills set to rise, the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP) expresses concerns about the lack of oversight into the necessity of these investments, especially when cost-effective alternatives are available. The gas industry is evolving rapidly, and SWEEP urges a shift towards sustainable energy practices.

Accelerating investments amid industry transformation

Residential bills in southern Nevada are poised for a nearly 200% increase since 2018, with the proposed rate hike driven by Southwest Gas’s capital investments. However, the gas industry is undergoing a transformative period, where clean electric heating options are becoming more economically viable for Nevada customers. Federal tax credits and incentives further enhance the attractiveness of these alternatives.

Evolving policies for a sustainable future

Nevada’s aggressive greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals and Clark County’s zero-emissions goal by 2050 necessitate a shift towards beneficial electrification and increased energy efficiency investments. SWEEP advocates for robust gas planning rules to provide transparency into capital investment plans and explore demand-side alternatives.

Electric alternatives: A viable choice

SWEEP’s study on the economics of heat pumps in the Southwest reveals that residents in Las Vegas could save money and reduce GHG emissions by switching to electric heating alternatives. Federal tax credits and rebates make electrification even more cost-effective, challenging the viability of continued growth in the gas distribution system.

The changing landscape of natural gas

Natural gas use is expected to decline, especially with the rapid decarbonization of the electricity sector in Nevada. Southwest Gas operates a modern and safe system, but the need for careful consideration of investments is emphasized. SWEEP highlights the importance of gas system planning, urging the implementation of strong Integrated Resource Planning processes.

Reducing air pollution and improving health

Switching from natural gas to electricity reduces GHG emissions and eliminates harmful air pollutants. SWEEP’s study demonstrates that electrification significantly improves indoor air quality, promoting public health. With the declining need for natural gas, SWEEP emphasizes the importance of careful consideration of gas system investments.

SWEEP’s call for sustainable energy practices aligns with the evolving landscape of the gas industry. As Southwest Gas proposes its largest rate increase, SWEEP advocates for transparency, oversight, and a shift towards cost-effective alternatives to ensure a sustainable and affordable energy future for Nevada residents. The changing dynamics of the energy sector make it imperative to prioritize beneficial electrification and energy efficiency measures over traditional gas system investments.
